3 Reasons Any Old Dehumidifier Can't Handle Basement Humidity

With melting snow, spring showers, and warmer weather -- keeping the humidity down in your basement may seem impossible. You want to make sure you have a dehumidifier capable of handling your below grade space! Here are 3 reasons why department store dehumidifiers won't make the cut.

1). They are too small, in every way. Their cold coil is too small, the fan is too small, and thus they don't circulate the air enough to dry the contents in your basement. The average dehumidifier is meant for one room, about 500 square feet. An average basement space is 900+ square feet and up. And you can't just dehumidify finished space, dehumidification must apply to the entire space because air flow will not stay only in your finished spaces or even just your basement

2). They usually aren't drained automatically. So, the bucket fills up and they shut off, rendering them useless until you change out the water. On average, it takes about 12 hours for these dehumidifier's buckets to fill up. If you empty it once a week, it is only running about 7% of the time.

3). Finally, most regular dehumidifier's are rated at 25, 30, and 40 pints per day at 80 degrees air temperature. Put them in 68 degrees basement and their effectiveness quickly drops below these numbers.

We use the SaniDry XP. Learn more about this dehumidifier here!

SaniDry XP Basement Dehumidifier

It can handle spaces up to 2500 sqft!It's also an air purifier; it filters particles out of the air such as dust mite droppings and mold spores. It removes moisture from your basement and automatically drains into your sump pump.

This dehumidification system is designed specifically for basements. It blows air over huge cold coil and runs the exiting dry, cold air through a special heat-exchange core that pre-cools the incoming wet air and recaptures energy.
